Body of one of the nine workers trapped inside a coal mine in the Dima Hasao district of Assam was recovered by army divers on Wednesday. It was the third day of the rescue operations, officials said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that a person has been arrested after nine workers were trapped inside a coal mine in Dima Hasao district, which "appears to be illegal". He also said a case was registered in connection with the incident that occurred on Monday in Umrangso area.

Officials said that since the location of the mine is in a remote area and not easily accessible, it is still not clear how many people are inside and what’s their condition

Disaster response personnel were on their way to the site, and the government had also sought the assistance of the Army.

Several labourers are feared trapped inside a coal mine in the Umrangso area of Assam's Dima Hasao district on Monday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Kumar Jha, speaking to news agency ANI , stated that the exact number of those involved remains uncertain.

The workers went down the mine at around 9am on Monday; and officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the flooding despite the absence of any rain in the region.
