Pacific Palisades appeared more like a moonscape of destruction than an upscale neighborhood known for its ocean views, beautiful vistas and celebrity denizens.

Two people are confirmed dead Wednesday and a thousand structures have been destroyed by four southern California wildfires in Los Angeles County as windstorms up to hurricane strength continue to fan the deadly flames.

Before the Palisades and Eaton fires, CalFire stats show only two wildfires in history scorched more structures.

Major fires have killed seven people, ravaged communities from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena, and sent thousands of people frantically fleeing their homes.

More than 4,000 structures have been destroyed in the Eaton fire in the Los Angeles area, county Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said Thursday.

Nearly 2,000 homes, businesses, and other structures have been destroyed in the Eaton and Palisades fires, and the number is expected to increase. The five deaths recorded so far were from the Eaton Fire.
