Former Charlotte County Sheriff Deputy John Greer was named as the accused killer in the 1979 cold case, the sheriff said.

In the years after his resignation, Greer reportedly applied to several law enforcement agencies, working at several police and sheriff's offices, largely near the west coast of Florida.
