BMW's next generation of EVs, known as the Neue Klasse, will have a boosted visual display. At a CES press conference in Las Vegas Tuesday morning, the German carmaker announced the BMW Panoramic iDrive — a complete overhaul of the current iDrive infotainment system from the operating system to the display screen.

The new "BMW iDrive" system, including windshield-length display, and "BMW Operating System X" was revealed Tuesday during the CES tech show.

Panoramic iDrive and OS X will be fitted to every new BMW from the end of 2025, starting with the Neue Klasse iX3 replacement and the de facto electric 3-Series. Is BMW on the right track, or has it gone overboard with the digital stuff?

The terminology, in typical Germanic fashion, is a little confusing. The entire system is called "Panoramic iDrive," with “Panoramic Vision” being the funky horizontal band display across the whole dash; meanwhile, the all-new software the whole enchilada runs on is named “BMW Operating System X.”

Said to make it easier to reach and operate by those in control, the display runs BMW’s latest OS X operating system that has been developed in-house for a slicker, more intuitive user experience.

Coming first to its Neue Klasse EVs before spreading across the lineup, Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X features a three-tiered display and an AI-powered voice assistant.
